i'll dispense with words such as "form" and give more of a lay man's critique on the work itself.
it still has that characteristic ability to seem disconcertingly bland - even though the back ground itself is one which is amazingly detailed and makes it a very expressive work
except for the "relationality" between the figure and all else.
whilst the subtle undertones of the shading make it more expressive (the face) - it still retains an overly simplified impression - which would've been perfectly fine, except the back ground is contrived enough to create different parallels between the painting itself.
one ornate, the other bland.
But otherwise, certain singular features of the work such as the work done on the eyes and the shadow work on the pillows (which should've been complemented more by the dynamics of the head) are all very well done.
All things considered- its a very good piece. Good show.
